Smith & Vallee had the opportunity to participate in one tree’s journey from the ancestral homelands of the Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian natives of Southeast Alaska to our shop in Edison, WA. We milled, kiln dried, and built a 21 foot long conference table out of this giant Sitka Spruce.
Our first attempt to cut these massive slabs resulted in a temporarily broken mill. We had to call in the big boys from Pacific Rim Tonewoods to handle this log.
This 21 foot long 4.5 foot wide conference table traveled in three pieces from Edison, WA to downtown Seattle’s native owned Sealaska corporate headquarters. Smooth sailing until we reached the elevator. Getting a seven foot table into a 6 foot elevator = no joke. We persevered.
